Women’s Chorus Welcomes Spring With ‘Fresh and Fearless’ Performance

The choir will take audiences through a range of styles and emotions

The BYU Women’s Chorus will present “Fresh and Fearless,” a collection of both classical and contemporary choral pieces in their campus performance on March 28.

“We open the concert with ‘Gratus Animus’ by Daniel Kallman, a virtuosic, multi-metric piece,” said director Jean Applonie. “We follow this with a pair of gems by Mozart, the beloved ‘Laudate Dominum’ and the ‘Gloria’ movement from the Missa Brevis in D major with violin duet.”

The choir will transition to the contemporary with a set that includes two pieces by Women’s Chorus staple Ola Gjeilo — “Days of Beauty” and “Ave Generosa.” The title piece of the concert, “Fresh and Fearless,” is a new setting of American lyric poet Sara Teasdale’s “May Night” by composer Daniel Elder.

The choir will continue with two hymns, “Rise My Soul” and “Let Us All Press On,” the latter of which was arranged by Applonie and was inspired by the German saints she visited while touring Europe with the Tabernacle Choir at Temple Square.

Applonie hopes that audiences will feel the range of emotions captured by the programmed pieces. “The Women’s Chorus concert promises to deliver beauty and drama, inspiration and fun,” she said.

The choir will end the night on a high note with an energetic medley from the musical “Mamma Mia.”
