The BYU Philharmonic’s Evening of Concertos Features Competition Winners

The soloists were selected through auditions open to upperclassmen and graduate students in the BYU School of Music The BYU Philharmonic’s Evening of Concertos will highlight the hard work and talent of some of the university’s top student musicians as they near graduation. “The annual Evening of Concertos is one of the most thrilling concerts each year,” said BYU Philharmonic director Kory Katseanes. “This concert features the winners of the annual competition of upperclass and graduate students. These eight soloists represent the pinnacle of skill and expression from the 650 music majors enrolled at BYU, and the techniques on display are truly amazing. It’s a musical thrill ride to hear these outstanding performers, and a showcase of the brilliant accomplishments of BYU’s best student musicians.” The soloists were selected in December 2018 after a two-round audition process open to all upperclassmen and graduate students in the School of Music. Each student auditioned with a movement from one of the programmed concertos. Violin performance major Donni Evans will join the ensemble on the first two movements of Alexander Glazunov’s Violin Concerto in A Minor. “It’s a stunningly beautiful concerto, and quite an underrated piece,” said Evans. “It is not extremely well-known, even among violinists, and having the opportunity to perform it with such an incredible orchestra is a great honor. I am incredibly passionate about this work and look forward to sharing it with those who attend the concert.” For Madison Moline, the soloist on Béla Bartók’s Viola Concerto, the concert is a rare but important chance as a music education major to perform as a solo instrumentalist with an orchestra. “The School of Music has allowed me to focus on music education and performance at the same time,” said Moline. “They give equal opportunity to any major, as long as you work hard and you sound good. That’s what matters.” Moline is grateful for the resources, training and opportunities — including the Evening of Concertos — she has received during her time at BYU. “I love the School of Music,” she said. “I feel like I’m in a family surrounded by so many amazing people, awesome faculty and friends. I get so many opportunities; it’s the best place for me to be.”   Tickets and Show Details Performance Dates and Times: Mar. 5 | 7:30 p.m. Location: de Jong Concert Hall, Franklin S.
