Prague’s Cirk La Putyka returns with ‘Slapstick Sonata’ Mar. 22

As part of the 2016-2017 BRAVO! season, BYU Arts presents Slapstick Sonata by the Czech Republic’s Cirk La Putyka and Finland-based Circo Aereo. The company will perform Mar. 22 at 7:30 p.m. in the de Jong Concert Hall of the Harris Fine Arts Center. The group will also present a performance for school children earlier that day at 10:00 a.m. “Slapstick Sonata is a prime example of the type of exciting, cross-disciplinary work happening in theatres all throughout Europe these days,” said BRAVO! series producer Jeffrey Martin. “The art form mixes elements of theatre, circus and dance to form a sort of hybrid performance called ‘new circus’ or ‘physical theatre.’” With a multi-talented cast of dancers, actors, mimes and comedians, Prague-based Cirk La Putyka is one of Europe’s most pioneering physical theatre companies. The company transcends the lines between acrobatics, contemporary dance, puppetry, concert and sport. The ensemble has twenty members including actors, musicians, acrobats, puppeteers and dancers. Set to the music of Mozart, Handel, Shostakovich and others, Slapstick Sonata is an absurd yet poetic theater piece without text or words. Visual poetry meets physical comedy with a dash of contemporary circus in this glorious explosion of color, humor, movement and silliness. “This work is impressive and entertaining, and I’m so pleased to be able to showcase it right here at BYU,” Martin said. “I think anyone who attended the performance of Espresso by this same company at BYU several years ago will agree that this group, and their particular aesthetic, is really fun and new and definitely worth experiencing.” Tickets are available in person at the BYU Ticket Office in the Harris Fine Arts Center or Marriott Center, by phone at 801-422-2981 or online at byuarts.com.
