Julie Fowlis Brings Gaelic Traditions to BYU in BRAVO! Concert

Audiences will enjoy an evening of ‘Music of the Scottish Isles’ You might recognize her voice from the soundtrack of the Pixar film “Brave” in the songs “Touch the Sky” and “Into the Open Air,” but sharing her talents with Disney is only one way Fowlis shares her Gaelic tradition with national audiences. Fowlis brings “Music of the Scottish Isles” to BYU as part of the BRAVO! Professional Performing Arts Series. Audiences will be immersed in the rich traditions of Fowlis’ homeland. Fowlis grew up in the Scotland’s North Uist island in the Outer Hebrides. She also has a M.A. in Material Culture and The Environment. Fowlis’ vocals have been described as “crystalline” and “intoxicating.” She is also a skilled instrumentalist who provides audiences with a feel for traditional Scottish music. Robin Denselow, world and folk critic for The Guardian, described Fowlis as “a traditional singer whose aim is to research and revive Gaelic songs.” He called her vocals “clear” and “gently thrilling.” Of her concerts he shared, “[Fowlis] was careful not to alienate her audience, and explained every song.” Fowlis’ career spans ten years and includes four studio albums and several awards.
