History and Music Merge in ‘We Shall Overcome’ – A Celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. featuring Damien Sneed

Recording artist Damien Sneed brings together musical genres to honor the civil rights movement and celebrate black history

“We Shall Overcome” — a celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. featuring Damien Sneed comes to BYU’s de Jong Concert Hall on March 3 as part of the BRAVO! Professional Performing Arts Series. Group tickets are also available for a school matinee performance for ages 6 and up.

Inspired by the life and legacy of Martin Luther King Jr., “We Shall Overcome” showcases the music central to the civil rights movement. Sneed — a multi-genre artist — unites traditional and modern gospel, classical, jazz, Broadway and spiritual music, interwoven with recordings of King’s speeches.

A recipient of the 2014 Sphinx Medal of Excellence — an annual award for emerging black and Latino leaders in classical music — Sneed has worked with legends such as Aretha Franklin, Wynton Marsalis, Stevie Wonder, Diana Ross and Carlos Santana.

Sneed applies his deep knowledge and unique mastery of these styles to present an energetic and diverse celebration of black history and identity.

Reservations for the school matinee performance can be made by calling (801) 422-5632 or emailing jonell_stoddard@byu.edu.
