Handel’s ‘Messiah’ to be Performed at BYU Nov. 10-11

BYU BRAVO! Professional Performing Arts presents Handel’s Messiah Nov. 10-11 at 7:30 p.m. in the de Jong Concert Hall of the Harris Fine Arts Center featuring the chamber choir Tenebrae and professional soloists from England. Celebrated for its passion and precision, the London-based chamber choir Tenebrae returns with soloists for a staging of George Frideric Handel’s timeless and glorious oratorio, honoring the life and mission of Jesus Christ. Award-winning conductor Nigel Short conducts the performances, which also include more than 130 students from the BYU School of Music, including Baroque Ensemble, University Singers and Concert Choir. Singers from Tenebrae will perform the solos, with the accompanying choirs joining in for the choruses. Short is a former member of The King’s Singers and previously visited BYU with this choir in 2012. “The impact of these performances and the experience of working so closely with these highly skilled singers will be profound on the students,” said Jeffrey Martin, BRAVO! series presenter. “Messiah hasn’t been performed in its entirety at BYU for perhaps more than 25 years, so this provides a very unique opportunity for people to experience this celebrated music here on campus, and for our students to participate with this professional group involved.” More About Tenebrae: Tenebrae is regularly engaged with the world’s finest orchestras and has appeared at major national and international festivals and venues including the BBC Proms, Edinburgh International Festival, Three Choirs Festival, Leipzig Gewandhaus (Germany) and Montreux Choral Festival (Switzerland). The 2016-17 season will see Tenebrae launch its inaugural Holy Week Festival at St John’s Smith Square, London, as well as concerts throughout the UK, Europe and the USA. Alongside concert performances, the choir presents its inspirational workshop method, The Tenebrae Effect, designed to challenge and advance every participant by instilling skills essential to a Tenebrae performance.
