Utah Symphony – Rhapsody in Blue, featuring Kevin Cole, pianist
de Jong Concert Hall
November 14 @ 7:30 PM
Kevin Cole, one of today’s leading interpreters of Gershwin’s music, joins with the Utah Symphony for an evening of Gershwin classics, including the ever-popular Rhapsody in Blue and Variations on “I Got Rhythm.” Rounding out the jazz-inflected, toe-tapping program are the Caribbean rumba rhythms of Gershwin’s Cuban Overture and his Second Rhapsody. The evening opens with a new work by Utah Symphony’s composer-in-association, Andrew Norman, who wrote Sacred Geometry using strict rules and “unseen geometries.” The result, Norman observed, was “one of the most spacious and openly emotive spans of music I’ve ever written.” Read more about the performance here. **Due to a recent back injury and on the advice of his medical doctor, Music Director Thierry Fischer has withdrawn from conducting this week’s Masterworks concerts, “Rhapsody in Blue.” Associate Conductor Conner Gray Covington will lead the Utah Symphony and guest pianist Kevin Cole in a program featuring Gershwin and composer in association Andrew Norman’s “Sacred Geometry” on Thursday, Nov. 14 at Brigham Young University in Provo, Friday, Nov. 15 at Abravanel Hall in Salt Lake City, and the all-Gershwin UNWOUND on Saturday, Nov. 16 at Abravanel Hall
