BYU’s Jazz Ensemble and Syncopation Combine for a Night of Jazz

The groups will play songs from various eras of jazz music

BYU’s big band Jazz Ensemble and vocal ensemble Syncopation will take the stage of the de Jong Concert Hall on Feb. 5 for a performance that will feature a diverse selection of jazz songs. Syncopation director Hayley Kirkland is excited for the chance to work alongside Jazz Ensemble director Mark Ammons to give their students a blended collaborative experience.

“This concert is such a unique opportunity for my students in Syncopation to sing with a big band as a vocal ensemble,” Kirkland said. “We have chosen songs from Glenn Miller to Chick Corea, from the swing era to more contemporary jazz to give the audience a fun variety of jazz music.”

Kirkland looks forward to seeing the student musicians have an opportunity to showcase their talents during the performance.

“My favorite song of the night will probably be the New York Voices arrangement of ‘Smack Dab in the Middle,’” Kirkland said. “This tune lends itself to lots of solos, high energy and extremely difficult harmonies that show off the abilities of these fabulous singers in Syncopation.”
