BYU Vocal Point Presents Diverse Setlist at Upcoming Annual Concert

The Emmy Award-winning a cappella ensemble will perform a varied setlist at upcoming concert

Vocal Point — BYU’s premier a cappella group since 1991 — hopes to captivate audiences with a setlist ranging from retro and current upbeat hits to inspirational hymns at their upcoming show Jan. 10-11.

The nine-man vocal band will kick off the new year with a concert packed full of never-before-heard arrangements that showcase the group’s vocal technique and choreography.

“Audiences will see that we have extremely talented singers in Vocal Point this year,” said the group’s director McKay Crockett. “Whether you’ve been to zero or 50 Vocal Point concerts, this is a show you definitely want to see.”

The group hopes to entertain audiences with their musicality while performing classic songs like “Staying Alive” as well as more serious inspirational arrangements.

Aside from the diverse musical lineup, the show will also commemorate many special milestones for members of the group.

This concert marks the conclusion of beatboxer Matt Newman’s career with Vocal Point. Newman will be passing on the torch to a new beatboxer at the conclusion of the concert.

“He’s spent four years making people’s jaws drop to the floor with his innovative and mind-blowing talent,” Crockett said. “We’re really going to miss him and all that he’s brought to our group.”

After growing up watching several family members perform in Vocal Point, first-year member Jonathan Meyers is excited to begin his career with the group. Meyers is especially eager for the group’s performance of “Be Thou My Vision,” which was originally performed with Ben Rector during the 2019 Homecoming Spectacular.

“I think it is really powerful,” Meyers said. “Hymns are one of my favorite things to sing in Vocal Point because you get to do all the fun stuff, but then you get to sing something that is really impactful.”

The concert promises something for everyone no matter age or music preferences.

“Just like any Vocal Point show, this concert will be fun, family-friendly and high energy,” Meyers said. “You get a little bit of everything, from throwbacks to current hits, some funny stuff, power ballads and up-beat party jams.”

Regardless of the setlist, Vocal Point always hopes to provide a bright spot in the lives of its audience with their concerts.

“There is so much heaviness in the world right now — we know people deal with incredibly difficult things, and we hope coming to Vocal Point concerts can lighten that load, as well as bring some light into dark places,” Crockett said. “We know music can be a great source of light.”
