The concert will feature wind band favorites from John Philip Sousa, Gustav Holst, Percy Grainger and more
The School of Music will showcase some of the composers who developed, shaped and elevated wind band music over the last century in the Symphonic Band’s Nov. 1 concert, titled “Pathways.”
“The concert highlights music from composers who have forged new directions in wind music,” said Symphonic Band director Kirt Saville. “We will feature the music of Gustav Holst, Percy Grainger, Vincent Persichetti, John Phillip Sousa and more. We invite you to explore these significant ‘Pathways’ with us as we take you on a musical journey through cornerstone compositions of the wind band world.”
Trumpet player Tanner Last — who will perform a solo portion of Persichetti’s “Divertimento for Band” — is grateful for the chance to dive into some of the foundational works of his craft.
“One of the most exciting things for me is to be able to experience these landmark pieces for myself; I hadn’t personally played any of them before,” said Last. “Whether or not we realize it, concert bands around the country have been deeply influenced by the music of these pioneers. They carved a path for wind band literature — without their contributions, who knows what things would look like for wind players today?”
The Symphonic Band musicians encourage audiences to join them in celebrating the heritage and distinctive capabilities of wind band ensembles.
“I hope audiences enjoy hearing the progression of band music that has occurred over the last hundred years,” said clarinetist Reagan Horrocks. “I also hope that the audience can hear the unique timbres that a wind band offers as we play these revered standards in the band repertoire. There are great moments of human connection as we listen to each other and pass melodies from section to section or support a soloist.”
