From New York and Los Angeles to France and Colombia, music fans all over the world are celebrating the life and works of composer Leonard Bernstein.
“Bernstein’s influence is hard to overestimate,” said Philharmonic Orchestra Conductor Kory Katseanes. “He’s a legend, an icon. Many of his compositions have changed the course of music history, as well as the cultural history of the U.S. and of Western culture.”
On April 10, the Philharmonic Orchestra and Concert Choir will honor Bernstein’s legacy by performing some of his most beloved works, including Three Dance Variations from Fancy Free; Prelude, Fugue, and Riffs; Suite from On the Waterfront; and Overture to Candide.
“Perhaps the most special treat of the concert is a performance of Chichester Psalms,” said Katseanes, “It is one of the most beloved of Bernstein’s pieces and is not heard often enough.”
The orchestra and choir will also be joined by several guest artists, including BYU School of Music professor Jaren Hinckley and Oliver Laughlin from the Cathedral of the Madeleine Choir in Salt Lake.
It Katseanes’ hope that this concert will “reacquaint people with this unique American genius.”
