BYU Arts Takes Performances Digital this Fall in Response to COVID-19

With public, in-person events cancelled, student performances will move to a new digital format

Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and in keeping with university guidelines, BYU Arts has made the difficult decision to cancel all public, in-person performances for the Fall 2020 semester. This includes all School of Music, Department of Dance, Department of Theatre and Media Arts and BRAVO! Professional Performing Arts Series events.

“This decision is a reflection of our commitment to the communities and students we serve,” said Amy Jensen, Associate Dean of the College of Fine Arts and Communications. “We take seriously our responsibility to protect those within our stewardship, including students, staff, faculty, guest artists, patrons and the BYU community.”

While the BYU Arts performance calendar has been significantly reduced, audiences can view digitally streamed events from various performing groups within the College of Fine Arts and Communications. Streaming links and program information for these events will be posted on BYUArts.com.

Determinations about Winter 2021 BYU Arts programming will be made later this fall. As decisions are made by the university, updates will be posted online at BYUArts.com, on social media channels (@BYUArts) and via the On Stage Newsletter. Please also visit the BYU Arts FAQ webpage for questions.

“We appreciate your cooperation in preserving the health and safety of the community,” said Jensen. “While this season is much different than was originally planned, we are dedicated to providing students continued opportunities to learn, create and perform at BYU.”

Fall 2020 Performances

School of Music

Students, faculty and ensembles in the School of Music will live-stream performances from their website. Large, small and chamber ensembles will be scheduled for one performance each during Fall 2020. Performances dates and times will be updated via the School of Music live streaming page and will include vocal and instrumental offerings.

Department of Dance

The dance department will host a weekly live streaming event titled “BYU Dance Live” in lieu of live public performances. These streamed mini-performances will feature ensembles including BYU Ballroom Dance Company, Contemporary Dance Theatre, International Folk Dance Ensemble, Living Legends, Theatre Ballet and Young Ambassadors. Additional streamed performances will include dancEnsemble, Ballet Showcase and Dance Senior Projects. Information will be updated via the Department of Dance live streaming page.

Department of Theatre and Media Arts

The 2020 Fall BYU Theatre Season will be dedicated to digital performance, with all performances conducted through online digital formats. Due to copyright concerns, some streamed performances may only be available for enrolled students to view. Decisions about the Final Cut film festival will also be posted on the TMA streaming page.

BRAVO! Professional Performing Arts Series

Out of concern and respect for the health and safety of guest performers, patrons and students, the BRAVO! Professional Performing Arts Series opener has been delayed until further notice.
