Performances will take place on March 7 and 8
When thinking about the magic of Disney films, it is likely one of Alan Menken’s songs comes to mind. In his first solo tour — “A Whole New World of Alan Menken” — he shares the music and stories that shaped his three-decade movie, TV and musical career.
Marking Menken’s debut performance at BYU, the solo show is written and performed by Menken and was first premiered at the Segerstrom Center for the Arts in September 2016. The BRAVO! Professional Performing Arts series has brought several composers throughout the years, but none has left such an impact on popular culture as Menken.
“Bringing this performance to BYU has been years in the making,” said Bridget Benton, producer of the BRAVO! series. “The music of Mr. Menken has become iconic not only for current students at BYU, but also for members of our campus community, young and old alike. We are delighted to welcome him to BYU and for our audience to feel nostalgic and uplifted by a true musical legend!”
Menken received his first big break with the musical “Little Shop of Horrors” that was later adapted to the screen. In the late 80s, Menken started composing music for films that created the Disney Renaissance — re-establishing consumer interest through a return to musical fairy tales. His film credits of this era include “The Little Mermaid,” “Beauty and the Beast,” “Aladdin,” “The Hunchback of Notre Dame” and “Hercules.” This era also garnered Menken eight Academy Awards.
Menken also took part in transforming many of the above films for the Broadway stage, earning a Tony Award for Best Original Music and/or Lyrics Written for the Theatre for “Newsies.” Other stage credits include “A Christmas Carol,” “King David” and “Sister Act.”
