“A Men’s Chorus Portrait” Paints a Musical Picture With Classic Choral Pieces

Enjoy an evening of quintessential Men’s Chorus music as the group presents a program of the familiar and new in preparation for its spring tour

Known for its broad stylistic range, from classics to hymns to spirituals to folk music, the BYU Men’s Chorus name has become synonymous with rousing performances. On March 25 and 26, the choir will bring all its rich history to the stage in the concert “A Men’s Chorus Portrait.”

Men’s Chorus director Brent Wells said that the aim of this concert is to feature the memorable pieces that have made the choir what it is today. Wells said that this concert “hits on all the notes that are the staples of the Men’s Chorus.”

“We sing hymns, we sing folk songs and Americana, spirituals and gospel music,” Wells continued. “[The concert gives] a broad overview of who we are as an ensemble and what repertoire we’ve become known for.”

This concert will feature songs familiar to audience members, such as former Men’s Chorus director Mack Wilberg’s arrangement of “Beautiful Savior” and Wells’ own arrangement of “How Firm a Foundation.” In addition, the choral performance will include music by American composers Eric Whitacre and Rosephayne Powell as part of the preview for the choir’s upcoming European tour in the summer, a set titled “Music of the Americas.”

Audience members can look forward to a veritable musical feast with the diversity of pieces that Men’s Chorus will perform. The concert will have something for everyone to enjoy.

For an evening of comforting classics and enchanting repertoire, don’t miss out on “A Men’s Chorus Portrait.”
