Jazz Ensembles Perform as Part of Showcase Series

The ensembles give a sample of what to expect in the coming year.

BYU’s premier jazz ensembles take to the de Jong Concert Hall stage in Fall semester’s BYU Jazz Showcase on Sept. 27.

The concert will highlight Synthesis, Jazz Ensemble, Jazz Voices, Jazz Legacy Dixieland Band and Jazz Lab Band. The ensembles are directed by Ray Smith, Mark Ammons, Emily Merrell, Steve Call and David Faires respectively.

The ensembles will perform a wide variety of music from the various subgenres of jazz, highlighting each group’s diversity and individual talents.

“It is such a privilege to share a stage with our peers and colleagues as we all start the semester, motivated by fresh faces and new music,” Jazz Voices Director Emily Merrell said. “What an exciting and fitting way to introduce the student body to BYU’s excellent jazz ensembles.”

The concert takes place Wednesday Sept. 27 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets can be purchased here. The showcase is part of a series of concerts that highlight the performing ensembles within the College of Fine Arts and Communications. Other concerts include BYU DANCE in Concert, BYU Instrumental Showcase and BYU Choir Showcase.
