‘BYU Essentially Ellington Jazz Festival’ includes performances from BYU Synthesis and guest artists
Brigham Young University’s Synthesis jazz band will perform Mar. 3-4 at 7:30 p.m. in the de Jong Concert Hall of the Harris Fine Arts Center, BYU. Tickets are $10 for the public, $9 for alumni or seniors, and $6 with a BYU or student ID.
“It will be a great night with lots of creative surprises,” director Ray Smith said.
This performance will be in conjunction with the 2017 BYU Essentially Ellington Jazz Festival featuring jazz pianist Tamir Hendelman and jazz trumpet soloist Pharez Whitted.
“We have some great guest artists coming,” Synthesis member Steven Hardy said. “It’s going to be a great concert—probably the best of the year. This is the one to go to if you go to any of them.”
Hendelman is an award-winning jazz pianist and has performed with the Jeff Hamilton Trio, the Clayton-Hamilton jazz Orchestra, Harry Allen, Phil Upchurch, Barbra Streisand, Natalie Cole and more. Hendelman’s music has taken him around the world from Thailand to Israel and Alaska to New York.
Whitted is an American jazz trumpeter, composer, educator, recording artist and producer. Born into a family of musicians, Whitted has studied music all of his life and is currently the jazz director of the new Chicago Young Symphony Orchestra. In 2016 Whitted was also named one of six “Chicagoans of the Year” by the Chicago Tribune.
Synthesis is an award-winning jazz ensemble that performs professional jazz in exhilarating and high-quality performances. The ensemble tours frequently and visited the Baltic region last summer. Synthesis member Dallas Crane traveled with the group to Europe.
“The world loves Jazz,” Crane said. “It’s an American art form, and Americans love jazz too.”
